You don't always need to by a pond kit there are alternatives

Unless you have a particular shape in mind like a kidney shaped fish pond you don't need to buy the full kit. There are several alternatives or ideas you can use. Just look around your yard for large preferably metal or plastic containers. You will need to buy the pond accessories like a pump, liner and lights.

If you prefer to purchase a complete pond kit be sure to pre-measure your area to make sure it will fit. Another good idea would be to pre-plan your landscape design.

Sizes range from 550 gallons to 3000 gallons for the master gardener and landscaper. Natural shapes and flexible designs over the industry standard round, plastic performed tubs.

Ideas for building your own garden pond

Old wheel barrows could be used for the shallow end of the pond, just detach the top part and dig the rest into the ground. We'll talk about the liner in a minute.

Old bathtubs are great for this purpose because they are big enough to create a deep end and shallow end in the same container.

To create the shallow end place a few big smooth edged rocks at one end with a flat stepping stone on the top. Only allow this platform to reach half way up the tub.

Now all you need to do is buy the pond liner. Fill any holes or cracks with a sealant and then place the liner over top.

When you buy the liner for a home made fish or water garden be sure to buy enough liner that it reaches at least 2 feet over the top.
